The most time consuming aspect of creating a laser cut wood model is the
preparation of the computer files. If you're willing to invest the effort
in the design and layout of your model, it can be cut for little more than
an off the shelf kit. With a properly formatted file a one-off model can
typically be cut in less than an hour!
Please do not send your files without first
contacting us regarding pricing and schedule.
We use a Universal
Laser Systems laser cutters with
CorelDraw® 11 running on Windows XP® as well as a wide range of other software.
The cutter features a 24 "x12" cutting area but all stock material should be limited to 23 7/8" x 11 7/8" .
All files should be drawn actual size with a bounding rectangle indicating
the size of the stock to be cut.
Part cut lines should never cross the bounding rectangle that indicates
the size of the stock being cut.
Part width and or height should be no more narrow than the thickness
of the material being cut.
All cut lines should be held 1/8" off the edge the material due to variations
in stock.
Northeastern Scale Lumber supplies our basswood and birch plywood, please
check their web site for available material sizes.
All parts must be tabbed to the material stock. Tabs equal to the material
thickness work well up to 1/16" thickness.
Files should be saved in DWG or DXF 2004 format unless the work
is a CorelDraw® original.
The two basic operations of the VersaLaser™ are cut and engrave. Prepare
your files by putting the cut lines on one layer and the
engrave lines on a second layer,
with each a different, non-white, color.
What you send is what we cut so no refunds are available on custom
laser cutting although we make every effort to deliver the product you want.
